If you changed it in preferred-xorg-*-version than it won't work,
because shr is not including any preferred-xorg-versions-*.conf config now (to
get always the latest available packages.

If you really want older xserver you need to include ie
preferred-xorg-versions-X11R7.4.conf or you would have all newest libs
with old incompatible xserver. You can include it in local.conf or add
it to shr.conf.

But in the end I would recomend you to try to fix that 1.7.3 compile
issue 

"No pckage 'gl' found" is maybe missing mesa (virtual/libgl provider),
but I have no idea what graphics chip is in that device so I cannot help
you there (I'm using mesa-dri for freerunner and sharp spitz).
